I expected some dark irony here, but I didn't expect it to be so far into Dr. Stangelove territory.

# History Critical Commons was launched in 2008 by Steve F. Anderson, with design by Erik Loyer. The project was supported by the MacArthur Foundation’s Digital Media & Learning Initiative and built using the open-source Plumi video sharing system in collaboration with EngageMedia and Unweb.me - en.wikipedia.org

# Mission The project’s goals are to: - Provide a repository of media (video, audio, and images) with a framework for transformative commentary and scholarly reuse - Advocate for and educate about fair use and copyright exceptions in digital scholarship - Offer tools and a community for embedding, annotating, curating, and contextualizing media in academic work

# Governance Key contributors and collaborators include: - Steve F. Anderson — founder and principal investigator - Holly Willis — chair of the Media Arts + Practice division - Tara McPherson — contributing faculty member - Technical collaborators: Unweb.me, EngageMedia, Infinite Recursion

# Features - Thousands of user-contributed media clips, each paired with transformative commentary - Embedding, annotation, and playlist tools for scholarly and educational use - Reliance on fair use principles and safe-harbor protections under U.S. copyright law.

# Impact Critical Commons provides an alternative to commercial media platforms by enabling educators and researchers to use and share media ethically and legally. It bridges the gap between media scholarship, pedagogy, and fair-use practice.
